Liposuction is a fat removal procedure for women (and men) who are of generally normal weight but have isolated pockets of fat; it is most often used when other methods cannot treat it, from areas including the abdomen, bottom and thighs. An unwanted and peculiar side-effect is the fat that's removed can sometimes reoccur; often ths occurs in a different area from where it was first removed.

Two basic techniques of removal are used; the tumescent technique and Ultrasonic. The most popular of these two methods, Tumescent, is performed routinely now in the USA as a treatment for unwanted fat.

Because the tube that removes the fat is not as large it helps to reduce the bruising in the area which is why the recovery period is longer using the procedure as it requires a general anesthetic. Tumescent liposuction is now the procedure of choice with cosmetic surgeons because the adrenaline added to the solution used, cuts down the bleeding that normally happens.

Traditionally, areas like the thighs, back, upper stomach and hips have been hard to reach and that is where Ultrasonic liposuction is superior to Tumescent.

Every medical procedure has some element of risk and this is no different because when using the traditional treatment process the plastic surgeon is unable to see exactly where the probe is inside the body. The best advice when considering this course of treatment is to consult with the surgeon about the best and safest technique.

As with any type of medical procedure, liposuction does have some risk attached although professional cosmetic surgeons take great care of their patients. Preparation for this type of treatment is imperative so a series of physical examinations are required to ensure that the risk to the individual is minimal. To ensure infections do not occur after treatment, cosmetic surgeons prescribe antibiotics to patients and re-iterate the importance of keeping wounds clean. Techniques in cosmetic surgery have moved forward in leaps and bounds especially in the field of fat removal.
